Chimeddorj Shagdarjav is a painter, born in Bayan-Önjül, in the Töv Province. As a child he was a horse herder, and he started to ride horses when he was only 4 years old.
After military service, at 26 years C. Shagdarjav began to paint. During the Soviet period, there were evening workshops for amateur painters, and so he began to devote himself to this passion. After this, he enrolled in the Fine Arts Department of the University of Ulaanbaatar and after 4 years he graduated in painting. His main pictorial subjects have always been horses. However, the horse is not only a personal and private memory. Through the horse’s imagination, Chimeddorj Shagdarjav wants to paint a broader social situation: globalization and the loss of the traditional nomadic culture.
