Artist’s Boxes | Collection Edition

Mark Dion, Dana Sherwood, Tuguldur Yondonjamts
3 screenprints, 9 mongolian objects, a handmade folder, a handmade wooden box, 2018
Edition of 30

This box has been realized as the first object produced within Redhero. Mark Dion, Dana Sherwood and Tuguldur Yondonjamts together explored different regions of Mongolia in the summer of 2017 and 2018, thus beginning the field research portion of this long term project. The artists have the possibility to work jointly or in parallel to create their final works.
The box contains 3 prints realized by Mark Dion, Dana Sherwood and Tuguldur Yondonjamts as well as found objects from Mongolia.

The box is made with wood found in peat and is certified to have been there at least 2500 years, during which time it underwent a process of mineralization. The thirty wooden boxes were handmade by Giorgio Benotto, a sculptor based in Venice. The folder containing the prints is made in Venice by Legatoria Polliero, a handmade paper shop on the right side of Basilica dei Frari. It is made of marbled paper, a technique first mentioned in Japan (825–880 ce) and China (986). This technique then reappeared in greater Iran in the fifteenth century, and was most probably brought there by the Timurid dynasty, a sunni muslim clan with turco-mongol origins.

The objects are collected by the artists at the Ulaanbaatar’s Narantuul market. They are mainly related to the shamanic tradition and are commonly used for ritualistic purposes. The screen prints were realized at doppiofondo, a printing studio based in Venice and managed by Tiziano Ciao and Vanessa Milan.

The sale of this series of boxes, produced in 30 editions, is designed to support the next researches of RedHero project.
